Two archetypal bikers -- Captain America (Fonda) and Billy (Hopper) embark on a coast-to-coast odyssey in search of real America. Along the way they encounter the many faces of America -- big cities, small towns, hippie communes, drugs, and whore houses. This film's monstrous box-office success made the big studios hungry for young directors, and spawned the freewheeling, low-budget independent productions that defined the cinematic Golden Age of the 1970s. It also launched the career of Jack Nicholson -- who steals every scene, puffing on weed and rapping about U.F.O.s.
